Love this Jake ! You’re spot on . Aren’t we all crazy 😂 I really appreciated reading this as a fellow artist ( only in a painterly way ) and definitely agree with the feeling that when something beautiful is created wondering wow where did that appear from? Certainly not me . But I like to think that we are an instrument which the universe (or consciousness or whatever ! Can channel it’s creativity . However having said that I don’t so easily feel when I produce something rubbish .. then it’s always ‘me’ that’s made it 😂. Love your music and hope to hear you playing live somewhere soon. Gina 😄
So, here's the thing - the brain is a funny old beastie that makes to do and think strange things...
For example, I have played guitar for a long time but never in front of people - is this because I do not believe that others want to hear my music or because I believe they are not worthy? Same outcome but 2 states of belief.
In reality it is because I am rubbish but you get the point...
Just because I love your music, should I only like similar stuff (Newton Faulkner is great) and not heavy metal Brit Pop/Rock or 80s pop? Love them all - Country? Not so much.
My point is that you can't please everyone but that shouldn't stop you, it is how we react, not what you release. Why does 'Pondering' always make me smile but I often skip 'Ghostess' because it makes me too sad at the moment. Shouldn't mean that you should only play songs from your first cd to keep me happy...
I may have a famously wonky cd rack but it's perfect fit for the room and was build by me, not IKEA. Others may not see it that way - but that shouldn't worry me. It's mine and they can share it if they like.
2 states of belief - this sounds like Paul below, and me sometimes!
Being rubbish (assuming you are) shouldn't be a barrier to playing music in front of people. I used to love open mic nights, you never knew what you were going to see next, and supporting people wherever they are on their journey is a beautiful thing. That said, I get it's a big step, never say never.
Skipping songs to suit your mood, god absolutely. There's music for every moment, and music that's wrong for every moment. Skip away, jump genres, I know I do.
Interesting points here Jake and to me your last comment is one I seemed to have read or heard often - "When an amazing line pops into my head, it’s totally mysterious to me. Where did that come from? No idea" that seems to be the case but the point to me is artists have amazing ideas that seem to come from nowhere, whereas we mortals....:-)
I love reading Nick Cave on this subject. Do you ever read his Red Right Hand Files? https://www.theredhandfiles.com. He describes his lyrics coming into rather than out of his head. He's see it as his role just to show up every day and be open to them, like catching rain.
It makes me wonder what's the difference between artists and not-artists? Artists have usually learned some skill (an instrument, painting etc), but how much of the rest can be explained by them spending more time in this receptive state? How many people who say they're not artists could create things that would surprise them if they found a way to 'show up' like him?
The irony is they're both wrong and have been distracting you from the truth all this time. Trick is just to make stuff and then make more stuff and enjoy the ride.

Only in a painterly way - I've got to take issue with the "Only" part!
Such a good point about the double standards there. We're an instrument of the universe when it's good, our fault when it's bad.
Thanks so much for reading and listening. Booking some live shows right now!
Fab ! Can’t wait , it’s been quiet a few years since we saw you last . Loving the new songs . 😄

Looking forward to the new stuff.
Happy Wednesday. Steve

Funnily enough he just wrote something a bit like this last month, beautiful https://www.theredhandfiles.com/voices-of-all-your-influences/
This rings so true for me, endlessly swinging between imposter syndrome and a god complex!

easier said than done sometimes!
Also, check out Vulfpeck's funky take on Debussy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJe6o3E4iCk
Love this!! Thanks for sharing.
Interesting and encouraging.
It’s why Freddie had a piano by the bed I suppose!
Clearly I need a bigger bedroom.
